What is Tsuinankai at Horyuji temple?

Tsuinankai is a traditional ceremony of driving out evil spirits at Horyuji temple in Nara, which has started in 1261. The 3rd of February is used to be New Year’s Eve (according to the old calendar) , the ceremony was originally held at the Imperial court.

The story of Tsuinakai

Three devil(Black devil, Red devil, Blue devil) throw out a flaming torch to the audiences in the event. (There is a fence in front of the audiences.Don’t worry about it) After that, Bishamonten(the Buddhist God of Wealth and Virtue) comes to chase the devils off.
